An additional four politicians have lent their support to a long-standing campaign from SELECT that aims to make the title “electrician” a recognised profession.
The Wall of Support, which displays individuals and organisations supporting the Protection of Title campaign, now includes MSPs Alexander Burnett, Colin Beattie and Graham Simpson and MP Dr Philippa Whitford.
Scottish National Party (SNP) MSP Beattie used his ‘brick’ for the wall to state:
“Putting regulations like this in place are not only vital in making Scotland’s homes safer, but also support the industry and those who work within it.”
The other politicians adding their names to SELECT’s campaign were also available for comment. Dr Whitford, also of the SNP, emphasised the importance of qualified electricians being employed at a time when homeowners are discouraged from undertaking DIY electrical work.
Conservative MSPs Burnett and Simpson also voiced their campaign support, with Burnett stating his belief that the title of electrician should only be used by a highly skilled and qualified professional. Simpson added that inferior electrical work was a huge risk to businesses and homes alike across Scotland and that work should only be conducted by those with proper training and suitable qualifications.
Support for this campaign gained momentum this year at both the SNP Edinburgh conference held in April and the Aberdeen gathering of Scottish Conservatives in May.
The subject has now moved on through Scottish Parliament with a Member’s Bill presently being prepared for a discussion later in the year.
